Google is indexing twitter *UPDATE*

TwitterToday I came across a twitter from @leosaraceni where he shows us that Google has started to index twitter. Very interesting indeed, because the consequences of this could be huge on SEO and SERP positioning. It will be very interesting to see how this will play out. If you want to see this for yourself. Type the following into google inurl:twitter.com “google index”.

Please comment, I would love to hear your views on this! A big thanks to @JessNewhart for RT @leosaraceni’s orginial message! Keep up the good work guys.

Just to show you how powerful this is. I write an article today called “How to twitter like a pro” Look what came up when I did a search for that: Google – How to twitter like a pro. Just thought this was a very interesting example of how they are indexing individual tweets! Also shows how powerful this can be for SERP.

*UPDATE* Some of my commenters have brought it to my attention that Google has in fact been indexing tweets for some time now. So I went and looked into this matter a little better. What I is happening is that Google News Alerts are new indexing Tweets, so you can new choose to merge your blog feeds with your tweets etc. I’m sorry for the confusion, I however think that with the Google News Alert indexing comes more detailed Google Search indexing. I’ve also heard that not all twitter profiles had been indexed, but now they are etc.

I’ll try to keep you all posted on any developments.

Check out and digg my latest Article: How to twitter like a PRO.

This is really an interesting article. I think Google is starting to index Twitter but not all Textes from Twitter - that would be too much. Also also have a twitter account and I am looking everyday to see whether google is indexing it or not, but for now it is not doing so.

IN Future Google will surely do and brands wil be disappointed not to have registered their brandname on twitter.
  • what are u saying, here, my tweets have been in the google index since my first month on twitter, that was like an year ago i guess
  • I don't think your right about that. I have not seen it doing this detailed and quick indexing of my tweets. I would love to see some proof of what your saying. Maybe what they were talking about on twitter is totally wrong. However, I don't think that is the case at all. Now when i write a post, talk about it on twitter. My tweet is actually ranking higher than the digg or my actual blog.
  • Looks like it is doing. Try site:twitter.com/vivek1209 in google
  • Individual tweets have been indexed for weeks as well.
  • That's interesting. I would love to see some data to support that. I wonder why I haven't seen anything about it till now?
  • Sorry to burst your bubble, but Google has been indexing Twitter for weeks. I started on Twitter 2 mos ago, because I saw the Google indexing on some keyword searches I was doing. It might have become more refine, but the concept of indexing by Google is not new.
  • This is nothing new, my tweets have appeared on Google since ages ago. Have they ever had a reason to exclude twitter.com from it's results?
  • Sure google has been indexing twitter in some capacity for a while. Thats not what I'm talking about really. Now they are indexing individual tweets. They are indexing it faster and better. Totally now from google.
  • Hi Gissi

Google has been indexing Twitter for some time now. I've noticed tweets coming up in the SERPs increasingly. It is interesting since there's no more than 140 characters of information that will come up. The links that are tweeted are nofollow and will therefore not provide any link juice. But however, if you get the tweet it self with a link to rank well by linking to a certain tweet, that is definitely beneficial.

Google is in a bit of a dilemma here, since links that are retweeted are most likely to highly relevant content. But since it's nofollow, they should not include that in their algorithm.

Btw, nice blog you've got. Hadn't seen it before :)
  • Hey Hjortur,

Thanks for the comment. Very helpful information, so I appreciate the input a lot! This is exactly why they say that the comments are sometimes more relevant than the content =P

But I'm not surprised you haven't seen my blog before. I just got the domain a little over a month ago. Used to have Gissur.com but never used it. However, now I finally got very inspired to really go for my internet presence, so I really started blogging about a week ago =P

Anyhow, thanks again for the comment.

Not everyone knows about Twitter or even take Twitter seriously. Now, the news about Google indexing Twitter will greatly increase the number of Twitter users to get more involved in the Twitter community.
  • Yes I agree. And like Ollie says. Companies really need to get in on the ground floor... or should have gotten in a while back actually to really have their brand established on twitter. It will be very interesting to see how this all this develops!
  • Wow, thats gonna impact big time for those brands that haven't got their twitter name!
  • Yablows
we'll soon see Twitter hitting the news with lawsuits and cease and desist. though it seems twitter has a good policy for recovering brand names already if asked. either way, more exposure to twitter will bring more people which inherently will bring more idiots... so we shall see.

I can hear SEO's everywhere whooping with joy and others crying manically... I'm sure as with all, it will be abused, but the savvy will shine through - Kudos to twitter!
  • Good comment. Very true though... I'm sure that google has some interesting ways to get around people abusing this. However the hackers and black hats will always find a way around to begin with =) It will be interesting to see how this goes.

However Flickr has been indexed for a while (which is where most of my views come from so it appears from stats) but I havent seen that be abused just yet... we shall see. good article though.
  • Yeah that's true... just seems like twitter users would be more inclined to abuse the system, think twitter spam bots, than the average flickr user. However I'm sure google will find a good way to fight it as usual.
