Twitter opens OAuth to all developers
Twitter has finally announced that their OAuth service, that has been beta tested for a while is open to the public. I would say this is big news, since people were getting sick of giving random sites their full twitter account password, and just hoping that it wasn’t a phishing site.
OAuth is an open authentication protocol that allows users to approve application to act on their behalf without sharing their password. More information can be found at oauth.net. Also you can take a look at a Beginner’s Guide to OAuth.
For those who don’t understand, it’s basically like having two different passwords for your account. One that you use to do all of your account changes etc. Another you can give to applications so they can post on your behalf; however they cannot go in and change your password. I would have to say that this is a big step forward for Twitter.
Take a look at twitter’s OAuth FAQ.
How do you think this will affect Twitter?
