How to twitter like a pro

09 Mar

TwitterAt first look, twitter will look very simple, easy to master and something you will get bored with fairly quickly. This is exactly the way I looked at it the first few times I tried to get into it. “I’m going to the bathroom”, “I’m going out” was about the extent of what I could see accomplished with this tool. However, the deeper you get into it, the more time you spend figuring it out. It turns out that twitter is one of the most powerful tool on the web today. Here I will teach you how to twitter like a pro.

Twitter Client

TweetDeckThis is one of the most important parts of being able to really get into twitter. If you are just using the twitter.com website, you really aren’t exploiting all the features that twitter has to offer. For me personally the only client to use is tweetdeck. Tweet deck offers you columned look at different feeds. I have mine set up to show my Public feed, then my Replys, Next my Direct Messages, then my Buddy List, and last a search I’m interested in. If you can only access the web, I recommend using Tweet Tree. It’s a very powerful version of the twitter page. Take a look for more info.

However if you are an iPhone user and need a mobile version. Take a look at Tweetie. Yes it costs $2.99, however it is totally worth it in my opinion.

Your Profile

twitter profileCustomize your profile with your own background and colors. Write a good bio, and include things you are interested in. This is something I base my follow back on a great deal. If I can’t see what your into, I probably wont follow you. Also have a link to your personal webpage, wordpress blog etc. I would say that having a blog with some good articles on it makes it that more likely that I will want to follow you back.

Pay attention to your loyals

The reason I say you should keep a buddy list in your tweet deck is because it’s important to follow what your loyal twitter followers are doing. If they just end up falling into the void that is your main twitter feed, you will not be able to follow what they are doing. Soon you’ll forget about them, and they’ll forget about you. I would say that this is very important to have your community grow.

Re Tweet is key

If you see something you find interesting that someone on twitter says, be sure to show him some love by re tweeting it. I’s very simple and shows your followers that you are paying attention to what they are doing. Simply type in RT @theirname or Re Tweet@theirname and then the message they wrote.

Link etiquette

You’ve probably seen small cryptic URLs all over Twitter. The reason people do this is so they can get write more about the link. Or also to shorten it if it’s too long for the 140 characters. I must implore people to please write a detailed description about what your link is. If you don’t tell me what is on the other side of that click, I’m not going to click on it. That simple.
TweetBurnerSeeing your linking success
I personally want to be able to see how many people click on the links I post on twitter. I highly recommend using Tweet Burner for this. All you have to do is use their service to minimize your links, it’s twurl and you can select it in TweetDeck. Then you can log yourself in with your twitter user name and password on their site, and look at your Archive. Very helpful.

Hashtags

I use hastags as much as I can. They are the #something. The reason people use these is to get their message out to a wider user base. It’s a good way to get followers in a certain area. Lets say that I have some good information about a new apple product. I only have 20 followers, so I’m not seeing the benefit of tweeting it. However if I write the message with #apple, then people that are actively searching for this hash will see your message and in return follow you if it’s good.

Search

Probably the most important and underused tools on twitter. I actively search to find new people to follow. For example I’m big into sharepoint, so in my tweet deck I’ll put an active search for just the word sharepoint, so whenever anyone on twitter mentions it. I get the information. If it’s something very interesting, I’ll end up following them.

#FollowFriday

I find this to be a fairly important aspect of the current twitter atmosphere. What we do on Fridays is recommend people that we are following to people that are following us. I would prefer to get a few very good names, instead of a long list of just everyone on your list. Also if you can put a description about them as well, that just makes me more likely to follow them. Another very good place to find people to follow is JustTweetIt.com, I would recommend you add your name to their list.

Twitter Analyzer

TwitalyzerOnce you’ve set yourself up a nice following. It’s a good time to start using some twitter analytics tools. My favored is Twitalyzer.com and twitter.grader.com. You can read more about them in a previous article here.

Be helpful

Twitter to me is all about helping your tweeple. I’m always trying to give out usefull information, or help others with questions they have. That is the best way to gain respect and follows on twitter. By doing this you also get help in return. Also just have fun!

3 ways to measure your twitterness

06 Mar

Once you have started to really get into the twitter universe. You find a need to see how you rank in your social existence. This being the internet, there is of course places to meet our needs. There are a few that I use all the time to see how I’m doing in my day to day tweetings. Look at this as your analytics for twitter.

#1 Twitter Grader

Twitter GraderThis is the first twitter measuring site I used. It gives you a nice grade by calculating the number of followers, people you follow, and how often you twitter. There is some other mumbo jumbo that they say their calculator does. However it does seem to not just depend on the number of followers, or number of tweets.

Twitter Grader GradeAnother very interesting thing they have is to rank where you stand in relation to others in your area. It gets you to strive to work harder on your twitter fame. I really like this feature a lot, makes me feel like I’m leveling up when I climb higher and higher on the list!

Check them out and look me up!

#2 Twitalyzer

TwitalyzerThis is fast becoming my favored twitter analyzing tool. It’s very powerful, and gives you a lot of data. They calculate your Influence, Signal, Generosity, Velocity, and Clout. Their site gives a detailed explanation on each of those measuring units. How it comes to the conclusion etc.

Twitalyzer StatsAnother interesting feature they give you is a top 100 list. This is not just a normal top 100, but you can filter it depending on any of the calculated units above. Here you can find people to follow depending on what your looking for.

You can also do time based analysis, or benchmarks on their site. To really get into the nity grity of your twitter life.

I doubt that there is another place that is as detailed as them.

#3 Tweet Stats

Tweet StatsThis is the perfect place for all you graph freaks. Here you get bunch of different types of graphs of your twitter life. Tweet Density, Daily tweets, hourly tweets, you name it they got it for you. Nice and fast place to get some nice info about your twitterness!

Another thing they do for you is give you your tweet cloud. Basically a bunch of words in different sizes. The size of the word tells you how many times you’ve tweeted that word. A lot like your basic tag cloud =)

Conclusion

There are many places out there that give you all kinds of stats and info about your twitter life. If you have any other favorids, please post them in the comments! I would love to write about them.

How I twitter

10 Feb

I understand this topic has been discussed over and over again. There is probably very little you can’t find on other blogs. I also don’t claim to be a “social media expert” as so many do. I just want to help new people understand how twitter works and how you can make the most out of your twitter experience. I want to show you the tools I use, as well as how I build friendships on twitter.

Twitter Tools

  • TweetDeck – Probably the best twitter client for your desktop. It allows you to take control of your twitter feed by having different groups. The groups are helpful when you start to follow more and more people. Another key feature is the search filter. With it you can follow topics that interest you, and find new users to follow.
  • TweetBurner – If you post a lot of links into twitter. You want to be able to follow how many people click on it, and when. This is the ultimate tool to do this with. At the writing of this article however, they are having some problems with users signing up, but they still show you how many clicks your links are getting.
  • Twitter Grader – A interesting tool that calculates a score for you based on number of followers, numbers you follow, and number of tweets. Then you can compare yourself to other twitter users in your area. I find this tool to be a nice way to find other twitter users around your area.
  • Quitter – This tool follows your followers. Lets you know when someone stops following you, and what your last tweet was before they stopped. Can be helpful to see if your doing/saying something a lot of people don’t agree with.
  • Friend or Follow – Here you can type in your twitter name. In return they will tell you who are your friends, who are just following you, or who you are just following. Can be used to weed out people that you don’t need to have on your friend list.

For a list of almost every twitter app there is on the market. Go to: Mashable.com

Social Twitter

  • # – This tool is underused on twitter in my humble opinion. When you are writing a twitter with a link to a video, do #video, or a link to something funny do #funny. The # is what twitter uses to group similar tweets together.  I use this as much as possible, because I know there are people out there listening to #video with twitter search. Since they are watching it, they will see my post and possibly find it interesting, in  return following me.
  • RT – You have probably seen people write this, or Re-Tweet. This is a very popular thing to do on twitter. It helps people with links or message get seen by a bigger group of people. So if you RT @USERNAME, there is a bigger chance that this user will do the same back to you if you post something if value. This propels your name to a new group of users, that in return might follow you because of the link.
  • #FollowFriday - A fun community tool that people use to let their followers know about people they find funny, cool, whatever. If you work hard and are continually submitting valuable information, its likely that people will include you on their #FollowFriday. So in return, if you find someone interesting, do a #FollowFriday for them as well.
  • Ask Questions – Ask your followers questions. Get them to think about topic. Basically get a back and forth exchange going.
  • Share – Share information with your followers. Try to give them valuable resources, or tricks of the trade.
  • Reply – Try to do a @ reply as much as possible. If someone is asking for information and you know the anwser, reply and help them out. This is the best way to get others to notice you.

This is just a short list of things that I like to do to increase my followers. I’m not claiming to be an expert, I’m just a person who loves twitter, and want to try to give a little back to the new people.

Twitter, born again

09 Feb

Twitter is cool again... for me

I’ve been going a little internet crazy these past few days and weeks. What sparked this whole thing was my re-introduction to an old… never before liked… friend, twitter. I had tried many times before to join this service. Many times I had done one or two twitters. Tried really hard to stick around, but ultimately forgot to return to the site, because it was BORING.

This time around however, something was different. I started running around twitter adding people I found to be interesting. By doing this, I get a constant feed of how other people are using; twitter, blogs, the internet, you name it. This in return got me excited about blogging (another old… friend) again. Now I’m confused. I am twittering all day, signing up for a new domain, getting a hosting plan. Setting up wordpress, the works. No longer is it a chore to do. It’s fun. I’m getting people on twitter that are responding to random musings of mine. I start to see my follow number rise, and what do you know. It’s fun.

In a strange way, I feel like twitter re-ignited my love for the internet. I had lost it… without really knowing it was gone. I had been aimlessly scouring the net, with no place really to go. Nothing to do. Now I had found my home again, which used to be the BBSs, then went on to IRC, and became uprooted with the fall of the warez scene (old school one anyway).

So to everyone that thinks twitter is this lame idea. Full of people writing where they are sitting at the current time. You couldn’t be more wrong. It’s full of interesting people and even more interesting ideas. Give it a try, find people you think have something to say. Listen to what they are doing, learn from them. Most importantly, give back.
